Baxter / Lampe

Baxter and Lampe, both south of Kimberling City, share a common history. The lakeside community of Baxter, in southwest Stone County on Rt. H, offers some of the most beautiful views of Table Rock Lake.

Before the lake existed, an official post office was located at Baxter from 1887 until 1939 when the name was changed to Lampe in 1940 in recognition of a major land owner, Fayette Lampe of Springfield, according to the Stone County Historical Society. Baxter Junction was the site of several stores, and cedar posts were cut and sold nearby. When money was scarce to pay for supplies,
trading was a common practice among Baxter-Lampe merchants and customers. Lampe, located along Mo. 13 at its intersection with Rt. H, offers several shops and services along Mo. 13. The Baxter-Lampe region offers housing from quaint cottages to gated estates.

Table Rock Lake created a busy tourism community in the Baxter-Lampe area in the early 1960s, and the area claims the best fishing in the region with access to Big Indian Creek, Little Indian Creek, Kings River, James River and Table Rock Lake. Secluded resorts, a large boat dock, public use area and desirable home sites keep the Baxter-Lampe area popular with residents and visitors.

“I had been coming to this area all my life for vacations. In 1992, when we needed to make a decision on changing what we were doing, this is where we came. I’ve always been in love with the area. I love the friendliness of the people and the slower pace. Everyone is so friendly, so accommodating. The scenery is beautiful.”
