Geo-Caching

<Back

Plan a high-tech treasure hunt in the hills around Table Rock Lake and have some fun with a relatively new sport, geocaching. With more than 100 caches planted within 25 miles of Kimberling City, cache hunters will find plenty to do when they are not on the lake.

GPS unit and mapRequired equipment is a GPS unit (global positioning system). You must also have the GPS address of the cache you want to find. A GPS unit will determine your location on the planet as accurately as within six to 20 feet. When a cache address or “waypoint” is programmed into the unit, the unit will display directions from your location to the waypoint. Then, it’s up to you to find the cache within the six to 20-foot radius.

A cache is a waterproof container usually containing small harmless, durable items of little or no cost. A cache usually contains a small logbook and pencil, and each person who finds a cache is expected to leave his or her name and address and a message, if desired. He or she removes something from the cache and leaves another small item in its place.

GPS addresses of caches and information about geocaching are available at www.geocaching.com.

Helpful hints:

  • You’ll need a local map and possibly a topo map, too.
  • Never go alone and tell friends and family where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Beware of the area - watch for dropoffs, loose rock, large game, etc.
  • Carry water and a compass.
  • Don’t forget to mark your car as a waypoint.

Good Luck!
