Skaggs Foundation awards $16,500 in scholarships to local students

Skaggs Foundation made a $16,500 investment in the future of local health care this winter by awarding 21 scholarships to local students pursuing careers in the medical field. The scholarships are for the spring 2018 semester.
Among the 21 scholarship recipients, 12 are employees at Cox Medical Center Branson, 15 are fulltime students and six are attending school part-time.
Cox Branson Cancer and Ambulatory Infusion Center nurse Holly Letterman is going back to school to become a nurse practitioner. This semester, Letterman received her second scholarship from Skaggs Foundation.
“I’m a single mother of two teenage boys and I aspire to set a good example for them,” Letterman explains. “I want to show them that no matter your circumstances, you can achieve your dreams. I want them to see hard work in action and learn to work for what they want. Professionally, I absolutely love my role with cancer patients and their families and I wish to have greater responsibility in their care and treatment plan.”
Letterman anticipates that by furthering her education, she will also have more opportunities to give back.
“I have been involved in medical missions with Project Hope out of Springfield and my hope is that as a nurse practitioner, I can have the flexibility in my schedule to be part of those missions again,” Letterman says. “I’d also like to volunteer with Live Springfield, Jesus Was Homeless or other programs in our local community.”
“At Skaggs Foundation, we are committed to improving the health of Stone and Taney counties today, but also ensuring that excellent health care will be available in our community for future generations,” says Meghan Connell, Skaggs Foundation president. “We believe there is no better investment in the future of health care than to provide scholarships to local students like Holly.”
Since its inception in 2002, Skaggs Foundation has awarded a total of $328,950 to students pursuing careers in health care.
Students wishing to apply for a summer or fall 2018 scholarship have until March 15, 2018. For more information about the scholarship program, visit SkaggsFoundation.org.
